Not much sandy bottom, but lots of tide pools and regular visits by sea turtles. No surfing options, but perfect for a dip to cool off, or watch the fishes.
Kaloko Honokohau starts on the Hula lessons and kailua side of the Honokohau Boat Harbor with beaches, fish ponds and foot trails for about 2 miles along the coat line. Please bring your own food, water and no littering allowed.
Limited restrooms are available. Small visitors center. There's a small trail around the visitors center. From the other side of the parking lot, there a trail to the beach area.
Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. The trail starts out as gravel but will turn to lava about half-way. The Hulaa path is ok, recommend going earlier in morning or evening to better see the petroglyphs. There is a paper guide for the petroglyphs at the petroglyph path. Once at the beach area, walk to your left to hopefully see sea turtles.
Saw 1 turtle while there. Please stay at least 20 feet from the sea turtles. Good place to stop. We Cell phone plans spokane plan on stopping here, but glad we did. We were returning from a coffee tour and saw this was nearby and thought we would quickly stop and check it out. Stopped at the small visitors center and talked the friendly staff and caught glimpse of kaklua hula class in progress.
We walked the small trail near the visitors center. We didn't plan on going any further, but before you knew it we were back at the car getting water, putting on sunscreen, etc. The walk itself isn't that interesting and there is very leswons shade so make sure to have a kailuz and wear lots of sunscreen.
